Food market - prices

120 nis - 16:00

Shuk Open Market - prices - September

3 boxes 20 nis (incl. corn) (or 2 boxes/15 20 nis)

Fridge items 2 for 10 nis:

4 x cucumbers -  2 for 10 nis
2 x Lettuces  - 2 for 10 nis
Celery + radishes both for 10 nis  (2 items = 10 nis)

Total 120 nis

  • Cucumbers baby will go straight for pickling
  • Cherry Tomatoes either for a tomato salad or in the oven-dried tomatoes to be used as flavourful a topping.
  • Peaches, nectarines are at their peak. To be used for seasonal Tarte tatins or fruit cobblers. Any leftovers can be utilized for Summer fruits. NOTHING is wasted.

Is this possible? Here's the proof in the above photo! (Had to revisit my photos - love this logging)

I bought  4 packs of cucumbers, pickled five jars on Saturday. (One jar is okras)
It's Thursday today. We are mid-way through the last jar!

Granted one went as a gift to a friend's birthday.
Tip: Always count that at least one jar will be given away. I never know who will turn up in my kitchen next. But they always do! Don't misunderstand me. I LOVE it. I am a compulsive sharer :)
Open house.
Good food
Good company
Good conversation

Turkey pastrama (Home made)

Served with home made pickles - delicious!

Steeped in the below over night

1 ltr of water
2 tbps salt
2 tbps sugar
2 bay leaves
2 tbps all spice
3 slices of garlic
2 tbps mustard
2 tbps ground coriander seeds
2 tbps cumin
Silan to smother
Source recipe

Spice rub

Black ground pepper
Smoked Parika
Garlic powder if have
Mustard seeds or mustard
Salt
Olive Oil
Silan

Not sure if better to removed the string holder and rub mix in or to just rub over the strings...?

Baked in marie bain for 1hour - till still juicy
Recipe states 1.5 hour at 150 °C
My oven clock stopped working so will try again with regular wall clock.

Kiddo sandwich with bacon, nothing to do with the the pastrama in the fridge and not used here.

Btw, the pastrama is best sliced thinly and this is easiest done when cold after refrigeration.

Bento Momo

This is one of those bolts of revelation in my life where the design is so awesome, so RIGHT, so sensible and it works!  How did I not have this before now??!!  Just glad I have it now and to let anyone out there know   It's worth getting!!

Love, love. love this, stacks up slim and small fits into any nursery bag.  Best thing, the food doesn't get messed up, unlike the large, flat, compartmental containers which has to be placed vertically into the bag and all the food pours to one side.
Here food is stacked and stays in place, perfect!!!
Plus the little forkies keeps small grubby fingers from contaminating the food.

Love, love, love.  So does kiddo.

Just to show the width comparison -  next to my mobile phone.
Super slim can fit vertically in any child's bag!
Food stays in place and any spillage avoided. Perfect!

Bento lives on!
From the left malloach, basically carbs, bread like yemenite breakfast. Veggie sticks and salt. Kiddo complained cukes are tasteless with sprinkle of salt....Far left, dried banana chips, almond nuts and dried coconut chips. Napkin, 'maybe' he will use it...

Nice to know what kiddo likes and what is left.

Left over rice and salmon. Kiddo asked for sushi for school.  Topped with veggie sticks and some dried banana chips and sweet pecans

Extra for me. Yum! - 2 days of sushi bento to school

Break from sushi, quick omelette, veggie sticks,

Football after school. Long day today. So added an orange for vital vitamin C

Camping/Scrounging/Emergency Work lunch

Frozen corn in Office freezer Rules OK!

With that as a base, my trusty couscous, and tuna tin always in the drawer.
Boiled egg and veggie salad mixed in. Delicious!

I always have in the office bag of essentials:
soy sauce
sea salt
chili flakes
sesame oil
black sesame, white sesame
olive oil
Ramen dried noodles

In the office freezer right now: I keep small amounts of:
calamari
shrimps
misu flavouring
sweet corn (in season)
frozen lasagna (new addition) re-heated lasagna with fresh side salad is great!
Parmesan cheese

The seafood should be 'cooked' by soaking in hot water only till done.  Otherwise they can be easily over cooked and rubbery.

Baked Potato and veggies

Potato pierced and microwaved from raw. (Takes ages - work micro wave about 15 mins depending on size)

Always have frozen post-cooked sweet corn.  NOT in microwave as is.  I like to immerse it in a tall cup with hot water from frozen.  Change water a few times and finally heat in micro wave still immersed in water for a final steaming hot, buttery cob.

Same with raw broccoli, immerse in hot water and micro wave ABIT  - still crunchy.

All smothered with butter, sea salt, and fresh black pepper.
